Summer 2009
Dear Families,
Research has demonstrated that the amount of reading a student engages in over the summer is related to academic growth during the school year. We urge parents to encourage their children to visit the public library regularly and read daily. Children should be reading uninterrupted for at least 30 minutes a day.
You play a vital role in helping your child enjoy reading. When visiting the library, help your child select books. Discuss your child’s reading interests and encourage your child to widen his or her selection of books based on author, topic, or type. Enjoy talking with your child about the books he or she selects and reads. Encourage your child to keep a journal of illustrations and/or passages about the books read this summer. Entries might include:
· This book(character, setting, or event) reminds me of …because…
· I wonder what would happen if…
· A new ending would be…
· Three questions ( and answers) I have about the book (characters) are…
· I figured out that…because I found these clues in the book about…
· I learned these new words…
· The author probably wants us to think about…
· Three new things I learned are…
· If I wrote this book I would change…
Thank you for your continued support. Bergen Arts & Science Charter School Staff

School Suggested Summer Reading List
For Students Entering grades 3,4,5,6,
2009-2010
(7th Grade List at the end)
These lists are in alphabetical order by the authors' names.
Please remember that children learn at different rates for many different
reasons. Grade levels are not the important factor in choosing a book, they are
just a guide. This list is not intended to limit children's reading. Children
can still enjoy books at a challenging level, at a comfortable level as well as
an easy level. Please check with your local librarian regarding the level of
the book your child is checking out. You can also go on to Scholastic.com, and
click on teachers. Then click on Book Wizard. Find the box that says Your Reading Level System and click on
Guided Reading. Type in the title of the book in the Quick Search box. This
will give you the guided reading level of the book your child is reading.
